Phantom Regiment – The Red Violin
The film tells the story of a perfect violin known as ‘The Red Violin’ for its rich red colour. At the film’s beginning, the violin is being auctioned in Canada. As the bidding starts, the violin’s history is revealed, showing that the violin has been in existence for over 300 years, having been made in 1681. Its history is told in five locations around the world: Cremona; Vienna; Oxford; Shanghai; and Montreal. To its owners, the violin causes anger, betrayal, love, and sacrifice. In each setting the dialogue is spoken in the appropriate language. Also, a variation of the movie’s signature violin solo by composer John Corigliano is played at least once in the period it is played, with the exception of Cremona, where the solo is being hummed by Anna herself. Throughout the movie, the solos are played by noted violinist Joshua Bell. (regiment.org, wikipedia)
The Cavaliers – The Great Divide
The Continental Divide of the Americas, or merely the Continental Divide or Great Divide, is the name given to the principal, and largely mountainous, hydrological divide of the Americas that separates the watersheds that drain into the Pacific Ocean from, 1) those river systems which drain into the Atlantic Ocean, and 2) along the northernmost reaches of the Divide, those river systems which drain into the Arctic Ocean.
Although there are other continental divides on the North American continent, the Great Divide is by far the most prominent of these because it tends to follow a line of high peaks along the main ranges of both the American and Canadian Rocky Mountains, at a generally much hig
her elevation than the other divides. (cavaliers.org, wikipedia)
Carolina Crown – The Grass is Always Greener
In true epic form, the corps will open with an introduction in medias res, revealing a glimpse of “everyday life” and an optimistic longing for the IDEAL. As the show progresses, that optimistic longing will be overtaken by unfortunate devastation as an apocalyptic event transforms and transports everything to “The Other Side”. Once there, the performers will embark on a magical journey of initial beauty, quirky creatures, dangerous darkness, forbidden romance, a climactic epiphany, and an eventual voyage home.
This adventure will be set to a multifaceted musical program ranging from Aaron Copland to Elvis Costello, while including many other familiar favorites and fresh new discoveries. Dressed to reflect the mysteries of enchanted lands far, far away, the corps and colorguard costumes will be inspired by the garb of literature’s most famous wayfarers and tales. Inevitably, the set design will be dictated by the traditional, immense, turf field; but as the show title suggests, it will also become part of the story in this epic quest. (carolinacrown.org)
The Cadets – Lenny (working title)
a reference to the great Leonard Bernstein.
Leonard Bernstein was a multi-Emmy-winning and Academy Award nominated American conductor, composer, author, music lecturer and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the United States of America to receive worldwide acclaim. He is perhaps best known for his long conducting relationship with the New York Philharmonic, which included the acclaimed Young People’s Concerts series, and also for his compositions, which include the musical theater works West Side Story, Candide, and On the Town. Bernstein was the first classical music conductor to make numerous television appearances, all between 1954 and 1989. Additionally, he had a formidable piano technique and was a highly respected composer. He was “one of the most prodigally talented and successful musicians in American history.” (cadets facebook, wikipedia)
Santa Clara Vanguard – Ballet for Martha
Born of a 1942 commissioned dance to premiere at the Library of Congress, ‘Ballet for Martha’ – Aaron Copland’s composition for his friend and contemporary Martha Graham, will title the Santa Clara Vanguard summer program in 2009. Drawing upon the original influence of the American spirit, youth, optimism and hope, Copland expanded the Pulitzer Prize-winning ballet score a decade later, borrowing the title Graham used for her new dance, Appalachian Spring. Based from my experience last year, I could understand one show better if i know what was the story behind that – I’m not that type of great person who know every song and can interprete every show that easy hehe. So in this year i guess it’s not bad to gather information more early.
*The Blue Devils program estimated will be released in April (still has minor improvements), yet i haven’t found any information about Bluecoats.
